Supporting individuals and businesses affected by gentrification 2015
Thank all the bosses and self made entrepreneurs for their inspiration and examples.
Last year i started a community development project in Lambeth/Southwark. This project took me on a wonderful journey in which i learned about the local businesses and rich heritage in Lambeth. The research we compiled indicted that we are living in the most diverse borough in London. Providing a creative array of business and amusement. The statistical data shows that 69% of the population is employed with 53% percent of the jobs are in the CCI aka cultural and creative industry. The economic times has encourage more innovative projects and supportive charity’s to bring more structure to Lambeth. Great supports groups such as Brixton’s soup kitchen, Fanon resource center and many food banks has emerge as a result. There is still room for improvement in many areas {Statistics show that 11,830 people were out of work claiming benefits according to the office of national statistics} that is 5.6 of the population.
The demanding times has force many to change jobs and even become self employed. The dark side of all this research is the present threat of gentrification, new licences and policy’s being enforced. The reality is that more and more businesses face closure due to the increase in taxes and rent prices. .
Our project empowering orientation aims to help poor people develop a clearer understanding of the social, political and economic factors affecting their lives, and to strengthen their awareness of their own potential power to control their lives.
Participatory orientation self-help projects where local people involved in the implementation of a project by contributing cash, tools, land, materials, labour etc. all donations go back to the development individuals and preservation of business in the community.
The first step in the fight against gentrification was the revitalization of local business and infrastructure, utilizing local services and skills and identifying key people within the community. Creating a open edible support network where all members of the community can collaborate resources, skills and jobs. The research information system created a organic digital enterprise in which members could use to support the development of local individuals and businesses by donated cash, skills, information and resources.
